I have never sold essential oils, skincare, leggings, or a downline of any kind. I did, somehow, convince a lot of people that I love to move to Florida, which is the closest I’ve ever come to running an MLM. Somewhere between the third and fourth person who packed up their life and followed me down I-95, I realized it wasn’t a coincidence.
I’m three years into my Florida residency, and people have kept moving down ever since. It started with my roommate in KC. When it got down to the final weeks before I moved, she decided to make the leap too. We started off in a one bedroom, one bathroom, one closet. Somehow it became some of the funniest memories I’ve created here. We made it feel like college again, just with stable jobs and money this time (a genuine glow up, if I do say so myself).
From there, the recruiting kept going without me even trying. Our friend Madeleine visited a few times, fell in love with it, and moved down. She’s been my roommate for the last two years, ever since Kate (my first roomie) moved in with her now-husband Maxx. Also from Kansas. He followed Madeleine down six months later. Then Alexa and Jordan, who’d been best friends with Madeleine for years, visited, saw the life we’d built, and brought their baby, G, down too.
It would be untrue, and a little conceited, to say this was all on me. I took the first jump. I just got lucky enough to have people who wanted to jump with me. I’m a saleswoman at heart. The real pitch, though, was never me. Nobody moves for the weather alone. They move because someone they love is already there, texting them about it.
Moving is hard on its own. A new apartment. A new grocery store. A new commute. A new community. Building all of that into a place that actually feels like yours takes time. It’s a lot easier when the people around you are like-minded. We hear our parents say, “you are who you hang around.” When you’re somewhere new, still figuring out your next move, that saying hits different. You’re extra vulnerable to picking up whoever’s habits, attitudes, and mindset are closest to you.
That’s why I’m so lucky for this MLM I’ve created, and I encourage you to create your own. Without Madeleine, we wouldn’t have Alexa. Without Kate, we wouldn’t have Maxx. They were integral in making this unfamiliar place feel familiar, and eventually, like home.
